Carter Young is one of the most exciting young labels working in the world right now. Founded in 2022, it's the brainchild of designer Carter Altman, who named it after his own first and middle name. A Detroit native, Altman knew he wanted to make clothes at the age of 15, and cut his teeth at bigger fashion houses before striking out on his own. The brand makes unisex clothing rooted in menswear tailoring and a deep love of Americana.
The references come straight from the American cultural canon, Easy Rider, William Eggleston, Coca-Cola, the backdrop of American life that exists between the coasts, all reworked into something modern and inclusive. Altman calls it "New Americana," and he isn't interested in simply reproducing iconic vintage pieces. As he puts it, he wants to use those inspirations to create something wholly new and contemporary. Each collection starts with an intensive research phase spanning film, literature, ephemera, and music, where a single song, photo, or painting can become the keystone for a whole capsule, shaping the fabrics, colors, and textures. The work is challenging but playful, unconventional but wearable.
The make backs up the ideas. Every collection is produced in small batches in New York's Garment District and small European ateliers, using meticulously sourced fabrics and trims that give each piece its own material history. Rather than developing new fabrics in a lab, Altman often looks to vintage materials and analog processes, cutting mainly from natural fibers, many with vintage washes for a pre-broken-in feel. Carter Young truly creates a new version of Americana.
